Setting Up A Sprinkler System

Sprinklers, as the name suggests are devices which sprinkle water into a designated area. Sprinklers also known as irrigation sprinklers, are devices which are used to water crops, gardens and lawns. Sprinklers are commonly used on residential gardens, golf courses, yards and several other places. Sprinklers save water and are often used as water saving devices in cases of water shortages and draughts.

The key to getting the best out of your sprinklers is to have a well balanced and coordinated sprinkler system. Good sprinkler systems are the direct results of great planning on the part of the sprinkler system installer. Sprinkler systems have to be installed in such a way that all of the sprinklers are used to their optimum capacity and no sprinkler is wasted, underused, or just as importantly, overused.

When you start installing your own sprinkler system, the first thing you should do is accurately measure the area in which the sprinklers are to be installed. An accurate measurement of the area will help you in deciding the number of sprinklers that are to be used and also the type of sprinklers that need to be used. Identify exactly how many sprinklers you need to have, and the exact type of sprinkler that you will use. You might want to purchase at least one or two extra sprinklers, in case they are required. It is always preferable to purchase a couple of extra sprinklers, especially if you are getting them at a discount than it is to return and buy them at full price because you miscalculated how many you actually needed.

The next thing to consider in a sprinkler system is the spacing of the sprinklers. All sprinklers should be optimally spaced, and not be too close as this wastes the individual sprinklers capacity. The sprinklers should also not be spaced too far away as this will lead to some areas not being watered at all, thereby causing dry spots in your garden or lawn. The sprinklers should be spaced in such a manner that the area watered by one sprinkler will slightly overlap the area watered by the others. This will insure adequate water is supplied to the entire area. After you have decided exactly much vacant area you need between two sprinklers, the rest will seem simple.

Identify the exact spots where your sprinklers must be installed. Keep in mind that each sprinkler must fall within the radius of the other sprinklers that you have decided in the previous step.

Once you have identified the spots to install your sprinklers, you must now be very comfortable in going ahead and actually installing the sprinklers. You might want to take the help of an experienced person at this stage.

To install the sprinklers you will have to dig trenches for the irrigation pipes which feed the sprinklers. After the trenches are dug, lay out the piping and attach the sprinklers. You will need to tap into the water supply and install a shut off valve as well. Check for leaks before covering the irrigation pipes.

A sprinkler system will conserve water, keep the lawn green and improve the value of your home. All that is left now is for you to enjoy watering your garden or lawn with your all new sprinkler system.
