Three Easy Home Repair ProjectsHome repair can seem difficult, even dangerous, but only if you are not sure what it is that you are doing. It's important that you read directions and manuals before you begin repairs in your home, turn off power for electrical repairs, wear proper safety gear and use common sense. Your local hardware store has both the parts and instructions to perform most home repairs. Here are a few very simple projects you can do yourself. Replacing a Doorbell One of the most common problems in any home is a defective doorbell, even though it is not a difficult thing to repair. In fact, you will probably find that it is one of the easier home repair projects that you may ever have to complete. Replace your old existing doorbell with a new wireless one. Visit your hardware store and buy a new wireless doorbell and electrical caps for the existing wires behind your doorbell. Before you begin, turn off the power to the doorbell at the main power box. Unscrew the existing doorbell and use the electrical caps to seal the wire ends. This will avoid shock and fire once the power is back on. Now all you need to do is hang up the wireless speaker on a bracket inside your house and hang up the doorbell button on the outside of your door. Applying the Use of Surge Protectors Surge protectors, which are used in order to keep your home's appliances safe from any type of electrical shock, are a good addition to older homes. One type of surge protector is the commonly used power strip, which offers people the ability to have more than one outlet, assuming your circuit breakers are set for the amount of voltage you could now use from this one outlet. By plugging a surge protector into an outlet, you will be able to protect any expensive appliances that you may have (such as computer or toasters) from experiencing any harm in the future event of an electrical problem. Removing the "Gunk" From Your Gutters Twice a year you should clean out your gutters; once during spring cleaning and once before the winter rains. This can be one of the easiest types of home repair tasks. The first thing that you will need to do is set put on work gloves. Then, set up an extension ladder, the proper way that it is to be used (on a flat surface). You should begin at the corner of your home, where the downspouts are. Set up a trash bag, for the "gunk" to fall into, while you use a hand spade to scoop it out. If anything does not come out easily, use your hands to do it. Once again, make sure that you are wearing work gloves to prevent any cuts or scrapes. Next, rinse out the gutter to the direction of the corner of the house (or downspout), with a garden hose that has a spraying attachment. Spray it until there is no more "gunk" inside the gutters. If you find that the downspout becomes clogged, you will need to make sure that you unclog it by either spraying water from the bottom end of the downspout with the garden hose or by using a plumber's snake to make sure that everything is loose enough to come out. This is also a good time to examine the gutters to see if they have any holes, cracks or weak spots and might need to be replaced. You may also find that painted gutters are in a need of a new protective coat of paint. This will prolong the life of gutters that steel or aluminum and not pre-colored. Hopefully, these three simple tasks have helped you see how easy taking it is to do-it-yourself and not be intimidated by home maintenance. |
