Electrical RepairsA blown out or broken light bulb is very easy to replace. But that might be the easiest of the electrical repairs and replacements that you might ever get to do. Electrical repairs encompass a wide area, from replacing electrical appliances, repairing loose wire ends, fixing creaking air conditioning units and ceiling fans, and basically repairing anything and everything consuming electricity. Electrical repairs might include, among other things, repairs of electrical appliances like air-conditioners, ceiling fans, dishwashers, refrigerators, ovens, washing machines etc. Electrical appliance repairs are generally not an easy project to take on. Each appliance is unique and the technique used for repairing one appliance might not always prove valid for the next. Electrical appliance repairs are best left to professionals. A botched job on an appliance could not only get you hurt, it could cause your home to be at potential risk of fire. Many homes are lost on a yearly basis due to faulty wiring, so it is a real concern. Sometimes the wiring in a home can get a short in the main electrical console. It could be from a blown fuse, which is easily replaced, or it could be a short in a breaker switch. You should never attempt to replace a breaker switch unless you know exactly what you are doing. These repairs are extremely dangerous in nature. Electrical wires generally carry electrical charges ranging from 200 volts to anywhere up to 600 volts. This amount of electricity is enough to kill a person on the spot, if he happens to touch one of these live wires. This type of electrical repair should rarely be attempted by the homeowner. These repairs should be undertaken by licensed electricians who do this kind of work on a daily basis. If you should find yourself suddenly without power in any part of your home, the first thing you might want to do is check the circuit breaker or fuse box. Sometimes a circuit breaker will trip, or a fuse will blow if too much power is being used, or if there is a short somewhere in the wiring. It is a simple matter to replace a fuse. A blown fuse can be replaced by unscrewing it if it is a threaded plug fuse, or by pulling it out if it is a cartridge type fuse. To replace, screw in a new plug fuse or press a new cartridge fuse back in. Always be certain that you check to see that the replacement fuse has the same rating as the one it is replacing. Safety is always your first concern. Anytime you are working on wiring or anything electrical in your home, turn off the main power to the house in your circuit breaker box. Many light fixtures, fans, and small built in appliances (like a disposal) come from the home building supply store with instructions. Most are easy to follow as long as you turn off the main power before starting and follow the directions carefully. Worn or brittle wiring is a fire hazard, so if you discover this while doing any home inspection or electrical repair project, have it replaced just to be safe. By the way, that broken light bulb can be safely removed by inserting a flat end of a cut carrot onto the broken bulb end still in the socket. Once you have it "stuck" on the broken end it can be easily unscrewed! |
