A Deck Extends Your Living Space

If you have decided to start a decking project, you will first have to take care of a few basic things before starting the project. The first thing that you have to consider before you start a decking project is the material that you will use for decking. You have a choice of many materials here. You can choose from treated lumber, PET Plastic, Aluminum, high density polyethylene, teak wood etc. The choice of the material to be used for constructing the deck should be made taking into consideration the structure of your house and also the compatibility of the decking material with the material used for constructing your house. Your budget for the process could also be a limiting factor at this stage.

Secondly, you will have to clear the site where the deck is to be built. Take care to clear all the weeds and vegetation growing at the area of the proposed deck as these weeds and shrubs often are the causes of many a decking process gone bad. Also, they damage your deck once it is built also. Hence it would be better if you clear them off now, before you advance any further.

After you have cleared the site, you are all set to start the actual building process of your deck. You will first have to gather some basic tools for this purpose. These include drills, set squares, screw drivers; tape measures, spades, and saws to name a few. It is possible that some of the tools you will need will come in two versions, hand tool and power tool. We suggest that you get the power version of any tool that is available as a power tool. You will thank us later.

You will also require the proper building materials, apart from the aforementioned tools which will include cement, joist hangers, decking boards, wooden joists, wooden posts, bolts etc. These are the materials you will use in building your new deck. However this list is not exhaustive and you might require a few other things every now and then during the course of your decking project. We suggest you ask experienced the professionals at your local home improvement store for their assistance at this point of time as they will know several tips that can help you get your decking project completed as each deck layout and environment is unique.

Many newer manmade decking materials come with clamps to fit the sections together. On traditional wooden decks, they will last longer if you screw them together rather than using nails. Be sure to use screws recommended for outside use. A deck is a big investment, which extends your living space and you should do all you can extend its life as well.

One of the best things that you can do before beginning a DIY decking project is to get a good book which deals with the basics of decking. Your local home improvement store will more than likely have quite a few decking books which will have a good selection of decking plans contained in them. With just a little bit of enthusiasm, and a little bit of hard work, your decking project will be on its way.
